Pilots, Volume 2
2.Schooners and open boats of the European pilots and watermen
Under the direction of Tom Cunliffe
The first volume of Pilots concentrated on the stories of American and
British schooners. Volume 2 enters what for many will be a less
familiar world, that of the European pilot schooners, the remarkable
pilot brigs of the Hooghly, and the small, undecked craft of many of
the less famous, but equally important, services. From the Hiates of
Portugal to the beautiful station boats of the North Sea ports of
Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, and France. This second volume also
focuses on such craft as the fast, seaworthy and spectacular gigs and
luggers from England, Scotland and Ireland. These vessels were launched
from the foreshore, almost regardless of weather, not only to board
pilots, but also to assist ships in peril. Volume II of Pilots is not
just about boats. Men also have their role. The book follows highly
difficult manoeuvres under sail on station, dangerous transfers at sea,
the routine of everyday life, the perils of heavy weather including
ships wrecked and lives saved.
Highly documented, this book reads like a novel. Alongside magnificent
paintings reproduced in quality colour; are line drawings and striking
photographs with detailed annotations…
